Well, that's interesting. I usually wind up off my mattress (thermarest). But, because it's not as bad as falling outta bed. . .I just move back on. Along with that, the sleeping bag has rearranged itself around me.
But, I understand now.

If your mattress pad wanders around during the night and you find yourself sleeping on that pinecone, try this...
Put your pad between the tent's footprint/ground-cloth and the floor. The pad then raises the floor above extrordinary rain, protects the floor (that should be waterproof) from sharps and ... isolates it from your tossing and turning.
We've even tried and tested this with our eXtreme luxury 6" thick self-inflating luxury air mattress that we carry on supported tours (when we don't have to schlep the stuff - did I say luxury? - about).
