HI  granddaughter i usually ride tandem with  is 9 years old ,also put 7year old in burly cart behind tandem ,yes they do tend to slack off , 9 year old stoker takes care of turn signals and blows air horn real well, they both do an excellent job waving at spectators, sometimes i request on hills "ya might wanna push a little now"  as you can see  from my avatar i am used to dead weight .

Seriously though we have a great time .

How old is your grandaughter?  I have a been on a few bike tours in the past before I got into the business of planning them and I always find it funny watching the moms, dads, and grandparents with a child on a tandem.  The reason I think it is funny because the adult is always in front huffing and puffing and red faced and sweaty, while the kid in the back is just peddaling along, looking around and smiling.  You can easily tell who is pulling all the weight.

We do hope to see the both of you out with us though.  It is a great bonding experience... no matter how much more work you end up doing. :P

Happy biking!

Allison
